Kumulos backend as a service (BaaS): Why I chose Kumulos for my iOS mobile backend by Theo Ben Hassen’

Born in France and now living in New York, 22 year old Theo Ben Hassen has been involved in coding since his teen years, and app development since College; which he later dropped out of to focus on development. He and a friend created 2 apps that hit the top 5 in the French App Store before Theo was snapped up by New York based developer SixAgency. He has been with them for 8 months now and calls his experience so far, “inspiring.”

Theo has been using Kumulos backend as a service  since April 2011 at his job with app developer SixAgency, creating apps for other businesses in the Beauty industry such as Kris Sorbie Touch Pro. We were lucky enough to be able to have a quick chat with him about what Kumulos has done for him, why he’d recommend it as a Backend as a Service and also some personal notes about working in the app business.

On the reasons he started to look for a BaaS, Theo says “I was tired of coding php scripts and linking them to the app every time I needed a new API.” So he started looking around online and found us: Kumulos. “5 minutes after the registration process, my new app was already loading data from the Blue Cloud.”

As for why he chose us, “I love startups. All the Kumulos is team is made of cool people and they have also the best customer support I have ever seen.” He’s also very happy with our price, calling it “ridiculously” good value. And that overall Kumulos is  “Fast, Reliable, Easy, Cool and Cheap.”

He goes on to talk about how using our Kumulos BaaS has helped his development team, “Since we started using it, my co-workers (content managers) are so happy with it and we are using Kumulos in all our apps for data analytics and much more.”

About app development he says “There are multiple ways to make money. Don’t think ‘Should my app be free with advertising or should it be a paid app?’ Be creative.” He cautions that, “Money isn’t the only the only thing you should consider when you are creating.” and that you should, “Build an app that will rock the top 50, get downloads and you will have much more solutions [in terms of cashflow]”

As for his own projects Theo has just launched MyDream with his best friend John Martin. He describes it as “…a French social network where people post their dreams and with the advertising money and sponsorships we choose one dream per most and we realize it.” He hasn’t stopped there though, with his next big project involving, “…creating a media network with videos, photos and music.” He remains mum on when it’s coming out though, only saying that it’s “Coming soon!”

Theo also has just recently come back from this year’s Apple WWDC, saying that visiting the convention was “…a dream of mine.” and that he feels “confident” about Apple’s release of the iOS 6 beta as Kumulos will give him the tools to use it to its full potential..

He finishes up  by saying, “I do not consider building a serious app without Kumulos now.” and that you should “Try it and forget SQL.”

Theo is a perfect example of the type of app developer we at Kumulos want to help with our Backend as a Service. Someone who is taking risks to become part of the industry because they love what they do, but they don’t have the infrastructure in place to really get the most out of their app development. Many of the best ideas come from this kind of environment, and with Kumulos we give them a chance to get out there and take on the market, even in these harsh economic times.

In the coming months we’ll have more from other app developers and how Kumulos has helped their own efforts. Tomorrow though, we’ve got a tech piece from our own coding guru Chris W on Apple’s recently depreciated UDID and how it’s possible to replace it.
